About Your Civic Symphony Orchestra

History

The Durham Symphony began in 1976 as an all-volunteer community orchestra, offering free concerts. The symphony was incorporated as a not-for-profit organization in 1977.

All musicians audition to perform with the orchestra, which is composed of a combination of volunteers and professionals, all classically trained. Throughout its history, the DSO's mission has been to foster the appreciation of music through the production of high-quality music for and by the residents of Durham and surrounding communities.

Outreach

The DSO also has an outreach program that seeks to introduce classical orchestral music to young people in the school system. Traditionally, between October and June, the DSO performs several classical concerts, a Young Artists concert, Holiday Pops, and outdoor family concerts.

Bring Us Home with You!

In addition, the Durham Symphony offers a Rent-a-Symphony service. This allows our supporters to enhance their private parties, business events and other occasions with music to add to the desired event’s ambiance. This helps our Symphony earn something to assist in our operating expenses

Available are combinations from a single musician, small ensembles, to a full orchestra. Reasonable fees are based on time and distance. It is recommended that bookings be made well in advance of an event in order to ensure the musicians’ availability for your needs.
