- Classical musicians age 13-21 (by December 1, 2007) are eligible to compete. Previous winners are ineligible.
- Entrants are to play from memory one movement of a standard concerto or a piece with orchestral accompaniment. Accompaniments should be available for rental. Rental fee should not exceed $250. Teachers should check that the music rental will not exceed this amount. Contestants wishing to perform a work with a more expensive accompaniment will be required to make up the cost difference.
- Only the performer and his or her accompanist are allowed in the audition room during the performance.
- Piano accompaniment for the audition is required; you must provide your own accompanist.
- There will be at least three judges. Please bring three copies of your solo part; one for each judge.

- The competition will be held on Saturday, December 8, 2007, from 10:00am-5:00pm at the Durham Arts Council, 120 Morris Street, Durham.
- The decision of the judges is final. The decision will not depend on the instrument played or the age of the contestant, but on the quality of the performance. Contestants who receive honorable mention, and who play an orchestral instrument, may be invited to play in the orchestral portion of the concert.
- Performing with the Durham Symphony: A Guide for Young Artists will be sent to the winners and their music teachers. This will inform you of performance protocol, what to expect and what is expected of you when you perform on stage.
- Winners of the 2007 Young Artists Competition will perform on the stage of the Carolina Theatre with the Durham Symphony on Sunday, February 17, 2008 at 5:30pm.
